We designed 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay to align with the values of the Garden Island, and to highlight the inspiring beauty of Hanalei Bay and the North Shore of Kauaʻi. During the renovation process, we partnered with Re-Use Hawaiʻi, a sustainable “deconstruction” nonprofit, to carefully salvage more than 144.6 tons of existing furniture, fixtures and equipment that would otherwise end up in landfills. Throughout the sanctuary, you’ll find sustainably sourced furniture, natural art pieces that pay homage to their surroundings, and an array of reclaimed Teak Joists, Puka lava stone, quartz, Caesarstone, and so much more.

Throughout our island oasis, you’ll find an extraordinary concentration of native plant species (70%) —endemic, indigenous, and Polynesian-introduced (over 1,000 years ago). Not only does this focus on native biophilic design give our sanctuary a nourishing feel—blurring the lines between interior and exterior, purifying the air and uplifting your spirits—but it also works to restore natural habitats, provide cultural significance, and reduce our sanctuary’s overall footprint. These plant species naturally thrive in Kauaʻi’s unique environment, and we hope they help you do just the same.

From hand-woven rugs to vibrant murals, the art throughout our sanctuary honors the community, surroundings, and local history that make Hanalei Bay one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Many of the featured artists are Hawaiian natives who share cultural stories through their art, highlighting the complex, multicultural fabric of the islands.

Our menus center around regional Hawaiian cuisine that celebrates the farmers, ranchers, and fishermen that call Hawaiʻi home. At 1 Kitchen, all produce, proteins, and seafood featured on the menu have been grown and raised on the Hawaiian Islands and fished from her waters. As you sip aromatic coffees and calming teas sourced from the islands, let the flavors take you on a subliminal tour of the world around you. Indulge freely knowing our zero-waste operations prevent food waste at every turn.

Rooted in the spirit of mindful living, the mind and movement program at 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay is all-encompassing, offering you an incredible chance to cultivate total wellness and realign your mind, body, and spirit. On The Garden Island, rainwater is an abundant natural resource. Our 7,400-gallon rainwater harvesting system allows us to irrigate our gardens naturally, reducing water consumption by 97% (3.5 million gallons per year). Inside, hydrate freely using our high-quality filtered water stations, and shower in peace knowing our highly efficient plumbing systems and low-flow fixtures reduce indoor water consumption.

Through our amazing partnerships with local non-profits such as Kauaʻi Surfrider Foundation, Waipā Foundation, Friends of Kauaʻi Wildlife Refuges, Save Our Shearwaters, Kauaʻi North Shore Community Foundation and beyond—we take pride in nurturing the unique community of Kauaʻi through our charitable initiatives. From healthy waters to equitable food systems, we take a holistic, open-minded, and hands-on approach to generating positive change in the community.

We set a goal to increase Black representation in leadership to 15% and female representation in leadership to 50% by 2024. At the end of 2022, we reached 10% BIPOC representation and 43% female representation. At 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay, we’re proud to say that 20% of our design and construction intentionally included contracts with BIPOC workers, and we will continue this intention throughout our operations.

• Spending the day at the beach? Please pack out what you pack in. Bring your reusable water bottle and avoid single-use plastics.
• Do a marine debris beach clean-up with your family! Visit our reception for a clean-up kit and take it on the road with you.
• Participate in Surfrider Kauaʻi’s Net Patrol cleanup every Wednesday at 3:30pm Sign up by calling 808-635-2593.

• Pledge to be single-use plastic free!  Enjoy our refillable water vessels or bring your favorite from home.  
• Our guest rooms are equipped with complimentary reusable aluminum Path Water bottles as well as 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay stainless steel water vessels.
• Refuse single-use plastics when doing takeout — please use reusable utensils whenever possible.

• Protect the reefs and marine life by using only reef friendly sunscreen.  We have a variety of options available in Goodthings and our Bamford Spa as well as sunscreen stations around the pools.
• Please enjoy the beauty of our reefs by looking but not touching. Reefs are alive and critical to a healthy marine eco-system.  One of the best ways to protect them is to avoid stepping on or touching them.

• Please admire all marine life including Hawaiian monk seals, turtles, dolphins, whales and rays from afar.
• Please don’t remove or step on coral.

• Please choose Ocean Friendly Restaurants for your island dining experiences. Each of our restaurants and dining venues on property are certified Ocean Friendly Restaurants. When exploring the island, look for the food establishments displaying Surfrider’s Ocean Friendly Restaurant designation.
• You can carry these best practices with you by minimizing use of straws and other single-use plastics.
