Nature As Art
When curating the art within our sanctuary, we strive to reflect our community, surroundings, and local history—rooted in organic and sustainable practices. To achieve this, we worked with like-minded local artists to create pieces that inspire thought and imbue meaning throughout every corner of our hotel.

RAINFOREST BY PATRICK NADEAU
“Rainforest” offers an immersive and fantastical entrance to the hotel, featuring a stunning 4-metre dome meticulously covered with over 50,000 strands of Tillandsia usneoides and illuminated to create a magical atmosphere. Walking beneath this rain of tillandsia feels like stepping into a dreamlike tropical forest in the heart of London. These epiphytic plants, native to the tropical forests of Central America, thrive without soil, drawing nourishment from light and moisture in the air. Transforming from silvery grey to vibrant meadow green when wet, they add a dynamic, living quality to the installation. Their fine scales reflect light beautifully, giving “Rainforest” the appearance of a mesmerising, living chandelier—a seamless blend of nature and artistry.

FLOW BY STEVE MCPHERSON
For over 25 years, Steve McPherson has used found objects from his local coast as the foundation of his artworks. Since 2007, plastic shards and novelties have become his primary materials, driving the evolution of his concepts and concerns. Despite being colour blind, McPherson arranges these discarded, wave-worn, and sun-bleached items by colour or other specific taxonomies, creating pieces that subtly explore the relativity of truth, history, and information. Through the interplay of text, content, and aesthetics, his work challenges our perceptions and the ways we assign meaning to the world around us.

STAIRCASE CHANDELIER
The chandelier has been designed and fabricated by Mika Kaskinen (KASKI DESIGN), a London-based lighting designer originally from Scandinavia. Known for his exploration of techniques and materials, Mika’s work blends industrial and handcrafted elements. This piece features coiled metalwork intertwined with handcrafted ceramic spheres, each meticulously hand-rolled by a UK-based ceramicist. The fingerprints and indentations left during the process are forever imprinted on each ceramic component, celebrating the artistry and individuality of its creation.

TORRENT BY KATE MCCGWIRE
TORRENT is composed of approximately 3,000 feathers sourced from across the country through a network of pigeon racers, whose birds naturally moult in April and October. Pigeon feathers carry a fascinating duality—often dismissed as remnants of “rats with wings,” yet, much like the dove, they possess a sculptural beauty when seen in isolation. This dual identity is reflected in their collection process: while pigeon keepers may see the moulted feathers as waste littering their lofts, artist Kate MccGwire views them as precious materials, treasuring every donation. By using these natural by-products of bird keeping—feathers that would otherwise be discarded—she gives them new life, transforming them into art in a way that is both sustainable and respectful to the birds.

LOST RIVERS OF LONDON 2023 EMBROIDERED ARTWORK BY ARCHANA PATHAK
Located in the Penthouse Suite, Archana’s artwork is centred around embroidery crafted with handmade threads created from old printed maps of London. This piece explores the city’s identity, its people, and its ever-changing nature. The River Thames, as London’s most enduring natural feature, serves as a focal point, reflecting the city’s growth, evolution, and demands while continuing to nourish it. Represented through the Thames, the artwork beautifully captures the essence of co-existence and the shared evolution of the city and its inhabitants.

WATERCOLOUR COLLAGES BY ARIADNA DANE
Ariadna’s creative process is rooted in experimenting with techniques that reflect nature. Her forms and textures evoke organic cells, celestial structures, and fossils, all with a natural aesthetic. The process is fluid, combining chance and intention, with each piece evolving uniquely. Using collage, cut-out, and shadow techniques, Ariadna’s work contrasts light and dark elements to explore themes of possession and loss. Her art evokes wonder and quiet reflection. This piece is located in the Bamford Wellness Spa.

WATERCOLOUR PAINTINGS BY ROSE EADS
Contemporary artist Rose Eads lives and works on the ancient Jurassic Coast of the UK, where she creates ethereal visions using watercolour, oil pencil, and graphite. Inspired by geology, organic matter, and decay, Rose incorporates natural pigments and rainwater from the Jurassic Coastline into her paintings, capturing the Earth’s forgotten fossilised thoughts on paper. Her work translates into energy fields, imagined galaxies, unique painted codes, and abstract dreamscapes, offering a sensory connection to nature’s history. Rose’s artwork can be found in all guest rooms.
