Step Into the Heat: Inside Seattle’s Floating Sauna Ritual with Wild Haus
Blending Nordic sauna traditions with the spirit of the Pacific Northwest, Wild Haus invites guests at 1 Hotel Seattle to reconnect through heat, cold water, stillness, and community on floating sauna boats.
In Seattle, where water, weather, and wilderness shape the rhythm of everyday life, Wild Haus is reimagining the ritual of sauna and cold plunge through a distinctly Pacific Northwest lens. Founded by a close-knit group of Seattle friends and family inspired by travel, adventure, and time spent together outdoors, Wild Haus blends Nordic sauna traditions with the city’s deep maritime culture. Built in collaboration with Scandinavian floating sauna pioneers and local Seattle craftsmen, the wood-fired sauna boats honor Finnish heritage while embracing the spirit of the Pacific Northwest.
Now partnering with 1 Hotel Seattle, the experience invites guests to move between restorative heat and invigorating plunges into the lake, with moments of stillness in between to pause, breathe, and reconnect with nature. More than a wellness ritual, Wild Haus offers a slower pace and a stronger sense of presence. Designed as both a wellness practice and a gathering space, Wild Haus invites guests to slow down, step away from screens, and reconnect with themselves, with others, and with the city’s natural elements.
We spoke with the team behind Wild Haus about the growing desire for restorative rituals, the power of communal sauna culture, and why life feels different on the water.
On the Water with Wild Haus
Wild Haus blends Nordic sauna tradition with the spirit of the Pacific Northwest. How does Wild Haus shape an experience that feels both deeply rooted and uniquely Seattle?
Our sauna boats pay homage to both traditional Finnish sauna culture with their design and craftsmanship as well as Seattle and the maritime culture that has always existed here. We wanted to embrace the nautical roots right here in our own backyard and given that we are a coastal city with a similar latitude to Scandinavia, we share the same weather (perfect for the sauna!) and proximity to nature. We wanted to bring a little bit of warmth to the city, and create a uniquely PNW experience that embraces the elements all year long, whether it’s enjoying the crackling wood-fire on a cold winter day or plunging off the rooftop mid-summer.
There’s something powerful about being on the water, especially in a city like Seattle. How does the floating element transform the ritual of sauna and cold plunge?
There’s something about being on a floating sauna boat that takes sauna/plunging from being an amenity with all sorts of health and wellness perks to being so much more, a truly unique experience that offers a new perspective. It’s inspiring to watch the world go by as you cruise around the lake with unmatched views through the floor to ceiling glass windows. Going from the toasty wood-fired cabin into the lake versus a tub just hits different, you’re closer to the elements and more in tune with your own rhythm as you find your flow with time to breathe in the fresh air in between so you don’t feel rushed at all and can truly savor the moment.
In a world that moves constantly, why do you think people are craving slower, more restorative experiences right now?
We always say Wild Haus is a place where fast lives slow down. Our lives have gotten so busy and over-stimulating with social media and screen time, and there’s starting to be real fatigue and burn out from all this time living in the digital world instead of the real world while moving at a pace that isn’t sustainable. Our aim with Wild Haus was to create meaningful offline experiences that encourage connection with each other and the natural world. It’s not just a sauna experience, it’s a place to relax and restore and give your nervous system a break from all the stimulation that comes with living in the city. The best part is we find that the reset you get on the water goes beyond the Voyage and many guests leave with a new sense of peace and calm.
Wellness today is increasingly tied to nature, ritual, and slowing down, and sauna culture has long been rooted in community and connection. With Wild Haus offering both private and communal sauna experiences, what is it about gathering together through heat, water, stillness, and conversation that creates such a meaningful sense of connection between people?
The origin of saunas goes back nearly 10,000 years. They have stood the test of time and have always provided a shared space for human connection. There is a simplicity to the concept of sitting in the sauna together, similar to when we gather around a fire. In our modern world, saunas have become a third place where friends and strangers gather and share stories. We especially love seeing people experience our Communal Voyages where they may not know anyone else onboard but they have a common shared interest, and an open mind. Forging new friendships as an adult can be intimidating, but this openness is what drives conversation and we often see people going out as strangers and coming back as friends. There is also the shared bond in doing something difficult together, like encouraging each other to take the icy plunge before warming back up with a restored energy and lust for life.
