From the heart of Michelin-starred Chef Johnny Curiel, Alteño pays homage to his Jaliscan Highland roots and traditions, incorporating a mix of heritage flavors and rustic preparations that spotlight the cuisidine and culture of the iconic Los Altos de Jalisco.
Raised in a family of chefs in Guadalajara, Mexico, Johnny Curiel began his culinary journey at 14 in his father’s restaurant and deepened his roots through an immersive exploration of Mexico’s diverse kitchens, from street vendors to abuelas’ homes. He went on to cook across the U.S. and Mexico before joining Denver’s dining scene and later consulting nationwide. Johnny’s passion lies in showcasing the beauty of his native Mexico through food.
Curiel’s solo debut, Alma Fonda Fina, earned a Michelin Star, Michelin Colorado’s Young Chef Award (2024), and recognition from Esquire’s Best New Restaurants in America (2024) and was a James Beard Best New Restaurant Finalist (2025). He has since opened Michelin Bib Gourmand Cozobi Fonda Fina in Boulder, One Michelin Star Mezcaleria Alma (New York Times Best Restaurant 2025, Bon Appétit Best New Restaurant 2025), Alteño (Esquire’s Best New Restaurants in America 2025), and, Mar Bella Wine Bar.
