Gary Janetti has mastered the art of the perfectly timed line and, as it turns out, the perfectly packed suitcase. During his stay at 1 Hotel Mayfair, the writer and producer behind Will & Grace, Family Guy, The Prince, and the New York Times bestseller Do You Mind If I Cancel? found comfort in all the right details: a smartly designed suite, a quiet terrace, and the all-important electric kettle. Here, he shares his thoughts on what makes a room feel like home, where to find the best fish and chips in London, and why good design always tells a story.

Spilling the Tea with Gary Janetti

You’ve stayed in a lot of hotels. What first drew you to the 1 Hotels brand, and what about your Mayfair suite made it feel like more than just another check-in?

I love how friendly and warm they are.  The kind of place you just want to hang out for the afternoon.  My Mayfair suite was like the most perfect apartment in London.  Quiet and charming and super comfortable and perfectly designed.  I hate when there’s a lot of wasted space in a room.  This room was always a delight to come back to.  With the best tub and terrace, too!

Are there any little luxuries you believe every guest room should have?

Every guest room should have an electric kettle and a selection of teas!  And this one did!

When you touch down somewhere new, how do you shake off jet lag and settle into the rhythm of the place?

I try to stay awake as I normally would and plan something I’m looking forward to the first night so I’m energized for the trip from the get go.

What’s one unexpected item you always pack, no matter where you’re headed?

I don’t pack anything unexpected. I always keep it very light. If I can’t pack in fifteen minutes I’m bringing too much.

We hear you're a bit of a foodie. Do you have any must-visit restaurants when visiting London?

I hate that word but yes I like food and restaurants.  Bouchon Racine is a must.  As is The River Cafe, The Devonshire, Oma, Gymkhana and J. Sheekey’s for fish and chips before or after the theatre!

THIS OR THAT

West End or Broadway: Broadway!  (sorry West End)
Afternoon high tea or an evening cocktail hour: Always afternoon tea!
Paperback or e-reader:  Paperback or hardcover always!
Day at the museum or afternoon of shopping: Hmmmm.  I actually hate shopping so museum. But for 90 minutes.  My favorite thing to do in any city is walk.
London or New York: Well, I was born and raised in New York City so I think you know my answer.  But it’s a close second!
