In celebration of World Ocean Day, we’re taking a look at how we can work together to reduce our impact on one of our planet’s most precious resources.

1. Ditch the disposable

Do your best to use reusable bags, beverage cups and food containers. Find ways to replace disposable plastic products with more eco-friendly options. Take it one step further, using products that have been recycled from something else: glasses made from wine bottles, for example!

2. Skip the straw

Millions of plastic straws pollute our ocean, choking endangered animals like sea turtles. According to Ocean Conservancy, the average American dines out four times a week and almost everyone is served a straw. Ask your waiter or waitress to skip the straw, and help keep millions of plastic straws out of the ocean and landfills.

3. Make sustainable seafood choices

Fish populations are being depleted due to high demand, loss of habitat and unsustainable fishing practices. Opt for healthy and sustainable seafood options when dining out. At 1 Hotels South Beach we launched PREY, a pop-up sustainable sushi restaurant conceived by chef Bun Lai, as a way to draw attention to more creative, eco-friendly fare. (PREY is no longer at 1 Hotel South Beach)

4. Help take care of the beach

When you’re enjoying the sandy beaches and salty waves, always clean up after yourself. Respect the marine environment by disposing of any trash or debris. Also, avoid interfering with the wildlife; moving shells, coral and rocks is disruptive to the marine eco-system.

5. Power down

Using fossil fuels adds carbon dioxide gas into the air, which creates the greenhouse effect that traps the sun’s heat. More heat means warmer oceans, which negatively impacts marine life. Powering down, walking or biking, and using energy-efficient light bulbs are three ways to easily reduce your carbon footprint.
