It’s no secret that Pride Month is full of parties, parades, and productions. But amidst all the fun, we can’t forget to honor the origin of this vibrant celebration.

이번 달과 매달, 우리는 성소수자 커뮤니티에 대한 괴롭힘, 박해, 차별에 저항하기 위한 지속적인 운동의 시작인 1969년 스톤월 폭동을 기억합니다. 우리는 증오 범죄, 정신 건강 싸움, HIV/AIDS로 목숨을 잃은 커뮤니티 구성원들을 기억합니다. 또한 성소수자들이 전 세계에서 일으킨 긍정적인 변화를 인정합니다.

As a company built upon the mission to honor and protect the planet and all of its people, we’re celebrating and uplifting the LGBTQIA+ community through special offers and various Pride Month events and initiatives that offer a safe space for us all to gather and connect—while directly benefiting local LGBTQIA+ centric nonprofits.

현재 1 Hotels 근무하게 된 계기는 무엇인가요?
저는 이전 브랜드로 이 호텔에서 일하고 있었습니다. 공식적으로 지원한 것은 아니었지만 SH 브랜드의 비전, mission, 나침반, 핵심 가치에 대해 배울 수 있어서 매우 기뻤습니다. 제 성격과도 잘 맞았어요.  

How does your identity shape your approach to hospitality? 
My identity shapes every part of who I am. I was closeted for so many years that living my life authentically is extremely important and valuable to me. I feel my approach to hospitality is through sharing, vulnerability, and warm connections with our team members and guests. I do not like to hide parts of myself. I love letting the team in to get to see the real me. I want to always be a role model for all the communities that I am part of.  

프라이드는 어떻게 기념하며, 여러분에게 프라이드는 어떤 의미인가요?
저는 성소수자 커뮤니티와 함께 파티를 즐기고 기뻐하는 것으로 프라이드 데이를 축하합니다. 저는 제 마음과 가까운 단체들과 함께 퍼레이드에 참여하는 것을 좋아합니다. 처음 프라이드 퍼레이드에 갔을 때는 커밍아웃을 할까 봐 너무 불편하고 긴장했던 기억이 납니다. 하지만 지금은 제가 얼마나 편안한 옷차림으로 행진하고 있는지 스스로 축하할 수 있게 되어 정말 기쁩니다.

이번 달에 자신의 정체성을 기념하는 데 특별히 의미 있는 프라이드 관련 활동에 참여하시나요?
저는 HIV와 에이즈로 목숨을 잃은 사람들을 추모하기 위해 촛불 에이즈 집회에 참석합니다. 저는 성소수자들이 자국에서 박해를 피해 캐나다로 난민으로 올 수 있도록 돕는 지역 자선 단체인 레인보우 레일웨이(Rainbow Railroad)와 함께 행진하는 것을 즐깁니다.

이번 프라이드의 달에 전 세계 성소수자 커뮤니티에 영향을 미치는 중요한 문제에 대한 인식을 높이기 위해 사람들이 할 수 있는 일은 무엇이라고 생각하나요?
사람들이 다양한 방법으로 커뮤니티를 계속 지원할 수 있다고 생각합니다. 파티와 커뮤니티 이니셔티브에 커밍아웃하고, LGBTQIA+ 단체에 기부하고, 다른 사람들이 괴롭힘을 당하지 않도록 보호함으로써 커뮤니티가 성장할 수 있도록 지속적으로 도울 수 있습니다. 커뮤니티 구성원이 승진이나 기회에서 차별을 받거나 눈치를 보지 않도록 하는 것이 중요합니다.   

자연에 있을 때 가장 즐거운 점은 무엇인가요? 산에 오르거나 집안 식물을 키우는 등 자연은 어떤 방식으로 여러분에게 자신을 표현할 수 있는 공간을 제공했나요?
자연은 항상 저에게 평온함을 가져다줍니다. 저는 여행을 좋아하고 자연과 하나가 되는 것을 좋아합니다. 자연은 제가 가장 편안하고 안전하다고 느끼는 곳입니다. 벽장 속에 갇혀 있거나 가족의 지지를 받지 못해 스트레스를 받을 때면 자연 속에서 달리기를 하며 제 자신을 다독이고 저와 제 커뮤니티를 위해 계속 싸우는 데 큰 도움이 되었습니다.

현재 1 Hotels 된 계기는 무엇인가요?
호텔의 콘셉트도 매력적이지만, 제가 매일 출근할 수 있는 이유는 따뜻한 분위기와 지속 가능한 목표에 대한 열정이 있었기 때문입니다. 단순한 비즈니스가 아니라 세상의 목적을 대변하는 회사에서 일한다는 것은 정말 멋진 일입니다.

How does your identity shape your approach to hospitality?
It has made me more aware of the immense diversity that is out there and how we serve such a wide array of people and how there is no “right” way or only way to approach hospitality. Our guests are as diverse in their likes and dislikes as we all are in our own identities.

How do you celebrate Pride, and what does it mean to you?
Pride is a celebration of how far we have come in the LGBTQIA+ community to fight for equal rights. Although our views of identity and love are different, we are all human and deserve the same respect. I celebrate in various ways but mainly by accepting my own diversity and embracing it every day.

Are there any Pride-related activities you’ll be participating in this month that are especially meaningful in celebrating your identity?
I will likely attend a variety of Pride activations to show support for the community. I look forward to coming together as a whole to celebrate who we are and how far we’ve come to be seen as valued members of society and not just outcasts. All Pride activations that embrace humanity are equally important in my view.

What do you think people can do this Pride Month to raise awareness about important issues that impact the global LGBTQIA+ community?
I think it’s important to speak about it, try to understand how people may feel, and provide assurance—be it as a co-worker, friend or just as a member of society. Not all of us have supportive family and friends, and many people are still shy about their own identities. So simply talking about it and providing support can speak volumes—even to those who are not as vocal as other members of the community. We all have our views and fight our own battles so showing support regardless of sexual identification is crucial.

What do you enjoy most about being in nature? In what ways has nature provided you a space to be yourself or express yourself, whether that be climbing a mountain or nurturing house plants?
For me, being in nature reminds me of being back to my roots and humbles me as a human. I grew up on a tropical island surrounded by beaches, mountains, and farms; being in nature humbles me and reminds me that we are all God’s creation.

현재 1 Hotels 근무하게 된 계기는 무엇인가요?
대형 호텔 회사에서 18년 넘게 근무한 후 새로운 도전이 필요하다고 느꼈습니다. 배리 스턴리히트의 아이디어로 탄생한 1 Hotels 알게 되었을 때, 저는 바로 그 기회를 잡았습니다. 저는 지금 1 Hotels 많은 호텔을 오픈했을 때 W Hotels에서 근무했었죠. 제 경력에서 최고의 시기였죠. 여기에 저에게 개인적으로 큰 의미가 1 Hotels mission 더해져 새로운 보금자리를 찾았습니다.

자신의 정체성이 호스피탈리티에 대한 접근 방식을 어떻게 형성하나요?
저는 환대를 제 DNA의 일부라고 생각합니다. 저는 제가 도울 수 있는 모든 사람에게 여행이나 이벤트 경험을 기억에 남을 만한 것으로 만드는 것을 정말 좋아합니다.

How do you celebrate Pride, and what does it mean to you?
I celebrate with friends and chosen family. Sometimes that means gathering to watch the parade or attend a Pride-centric event. But I celebrate my identity every day and truly that is what being prideful is all about—loving who I am.

이번 달에 참여할 프라이드 관련 활동 중 자신의 정체성을 기념하는 데 특히 의미 있는 행사가 있나요?
제가 속한 전문 회의기획자 협회의 연례 컨벤션이 올해 San Francisco 열립니다. 저는 협회에서 성소수자 관련 행사를 만드는 데 도움을 주었기 때문에 올해도 이 행사에 참석할 예정입니다.

What do you think people can do this Pride Month to raise awareness about important issues that impact the global LGBTQIA+ community?
Pride Month is also Primary Month. I think everyone should use their voice and vote for change that upholds all human rights and equality.

자연에 있을 때 가장 즐거운 점은 무엇인가요? 산에 오르거나 집안 식물을 키우는 등 자연은 어떤 방식으로 여러분에게 자신을 표현할 수 있는 공간을 제공하나요?
저는 자연의 평화로움과 상대적인 고요함을 가장 좋아합니다. 야외에 나가서 날씨나 동물의 소리에 귀를 기울이면 마음이 맑아집니다. 도시에서 북쪽으로 3시간 정도 떨어진 곳에 작은 농장이 있는데 그곳이 제 휴식처입니다. 그곳에서 염소, 닭, 개와 함께 어울릴 수 있어요. 농장을 산책하며 도시 생활에서 벗어나 긴장을 풀 수 있어요. 그곳에서 보내는 하루하루가 명상 세션처럼 느껴지죠.

1 Hotels 현재 직책을 맡게 된 계기는 무엇인가요?
저는 접객업, 직원 관리, 직원들의 성장에 대한 열정을 가지고 있습니다. 1 Hotels 지속 가능성에 중점을 두어 모든 사람과 자연에 대한 배려와 사랑이라는 진정한 정체성을 구현합니다.

자신의 정체성이 호스피탈리티에 대한 접근 방식을 어떻게 형성하나요?
저는 매우 외향적이고 친근한 성격이기 때문에 항상 모든 사람의 행복을 증진하는 최고의 서비스를 추구합니다.

프라이드는 어떻게 기념하며, 여러분에게 프라이드는 어떤 의미인가요?
저는 매일 프라이드 데이를 기념합니다! 6월 프라이드의 달은 제가 속한 커뮤니티의 사람들이 우리의 평등한 권리를 위해 싸웠다는 사실을 상기시켜주며, 이는 전 세계 여러 곳에서 계속 일어나고 있는 싸움입니다. 저는 미국에 살고 있는 것이 축복이고, 그래서 이 싸움을 응원하는 것이 정당합니다! 

What do you think people can do this pride month to raise awareness about important issues that impact the global LGBTQIA+ community?
All awareness comes from educating people on what a sexual orientation is. Ignorance of the majority of people is the issue, we have to talk about it and understand how natural it is.

What do you enjoy most about being in nature? In what ways has nature provided you a space to be yourself or express yourself, whether that be climbing a mountain or nurturing house plants? 
Being in nature makes me feel connected, at peace, fulfilled, and content with myself. Funny fact, I grew up in the countryside, and hated it. Now, all I want is to move to a farm away from the city and just have a bed and breakfast where I can enjoy hosting guests, serving quality food, and providing an accommodating and relaxing time in nature.
