The Women of 1 Hotels

From behind-the-scenes in sales, to running the show in the kitchen, keeping our properties in tip-top shape in the engineering department, or greeting our guests at the Concierge Desk, women play an integral role in the 1 Hotels experience.

42% of our team members at 1 Hotels are women. 47% of leadership positions at the company are held by women. (And we’d like to see that number grow!)

In celebration of International Women’s Day, we want to shine a spotlight on just a few of the many women of 1 Hotels by sharing some of the things that make them who they are, both at work and in their everyday lives.

Yanela Arroyo
Director of Engineering
1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge
When did you join 1 Hotels and where were you before your role here?
I joined in August of 2016, coming from 10 years of working with Hyatt hotels in the engineering department.
What is the most rewarding and the most challenging part of your job?
The answer to both is making problems go away behind the scenes, coming up with solutions! Usually guests and employees don’t know and shouldn’t feel affected by anything but providing or enjoying a great experience.
Tell us about a woman who inspires you.
My mother. She raised four kids as a single mother and still managed to have a full time job with the United Nations. She started as a mail clerk and now has moved her way to the investigations department.

Nikki Berry
Director of Rooms

  Tell us about your team.
My team is made up of an amazing, passionate and loyal group of leaders and team members.  Their commitment to me and to the hotel is truly remarkable, and I feel blessed to work alongside them.

How do you do all the good you can?
The service industry has enlightened me about people, interactions and social awareness.  So in every interaction I have whether it is at work, outside of work, no matter with who I focus on making each interaction with the people I engage with genuine and heartfelt.  Its amazing how powerful that is…

What is your favorite #daylife activity?
I love to take a run along the water…breathe in the fresh air…and be thankful that I live in such a beautiful place to do so.

Nicole Longchamp
Concierge
1 Hotel Central Park

What is life like outside of 1 Hotels for you?
My life can be quite busy outside of 1 Hotels.  I enjoy Broadway Shows, dining out with friends and exploring our city (especially our historical neighborhoods). I also enjoy traveling, and coincidentally am heading to South East Asia next Monday!
What is your favorite place to travel to, and where in the world would you go if you could go anywhere?
My favorite place to travel is back home after jaunting around our Blue/Green Planet. I having been thinking about going to Norway and seeing the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) via Dog Sled.
How do you do all the good you can?
I am currently on the 1 Hotels Sustainability Council and enjoy volunteering my time with colleagues or on my own. I have a recycling station at home and reduce unnecessary lighting in my home. I also donate clothing to those in need.

Ginger Pierce

What is life like outside of 1 Hotels (and Jams) for you?
Busy!  I’m a mother of 2 boys so they keep me very busy. I also love being outdoors, in or out of the city. I am an avid runner and am looking to prequalify for the 2018 NYC marathon. I like checking out other restaurants the city. I also enjoy reading and writing.
Tell us about a woman who inspires you.
There are so many woman that inspire me.  Lately I have been increasingly inspired by the women chefs who have come before me, starting with Julia Childs, but also Alice Waters, Edna Lewis, Anita Lo, Gabrielle Hamilton, Nancy Silverton, Judy Rodgers… too many inspiring ladies to name.
The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is #beboldforchange. What does that mean for you?
Never be afraid to show who you are, even in the face of those who might not agree.

Cornelia Samara
General Manager
1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge
  Tell us about your team.
They are the best!! What I love most about the team is that it feels like a family. We are Sisters and Brothers, Aunts and Uncles, Fathers and Mothers! Sometimes we fight…but for a good cause. We make up at the end. I love them all and could not do what I do without them.
What is the most rewarding and the most challenging part of your job?
The most rewarding part of my job is my team. It’s extremely gratifying to be surrounded by a group of passionate, energetic and positive people who are striving for excellence. Everyone is on the same mission together: to make 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge the #best1yet. The most challenging part is probably seeing how much personal time the team sacrifices in their work.
What is your favorite #daylife activity?
Running!  I hope to do more of that in the Spring.

Kathryn Williams
Director of Sales
1 Hotel South Beach
When did you join 1 Hotels and where were you before your role here?
I joined 1 Hotel South Beach on September 2, 2014. Previously, I was Director of Sales & Marketing at The Tides South Beach, a small boutique hotel on Ocean Drive.
What is your favorite #daylife activity?
Playing in the park with my daughter and going for walks with her and my husband.
The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is #beboldforchange. What does that mean for you?
Don’t be afraid to ask questions, fight for what you believe in, speak out if you disagree with something and let your voice be heard. Others who feel the same way will join you, but might have been too afraid to speak out on their own. There is always strength in numbers and it only takes one person to ignite change.
